The Boomer Revolution

The boomer generation revolutionizes life.  As a demographic bulge they have a remarkable talent for remodeling society through sheer force of numbers.  Teenagers didn’t exist until the boomers decided to listen to the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles.  Boomers are the brightest burning constellation in any marketing strategy because there’s power (and money!) in numbers.  Off course it helps that they’re the wealthiest, best educated, and most influential members of society today.  As I like to joke with my parents, thank god for baby boomers!  The internet and blogosphere are my favorite boomer inventions!

Boomers are going to revolutionize how people with disabilities receive care.  People of my parent’s generation are now finding themselves at the cusp of old age.  Not that any self-respecting boomer would admit to getting old.  Over 25% of boomers claim they will never retire.  Such workaholics!  Their indefatigable spirit has prepared them to fight things like early onset Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and other indignities inflicted by the passage of time in new and exciting ways.

People in community living have historically been a minority.  Their issues surrounding lack of access, opportunity, mobility, and respect have fallen on deaf ears.  A cultural revolution requires a following; a powerful voice that cannot be quelled.  Cue the world’s largest generation and its impending problem with all of these issues.

Never before has an aging generation had such power, experience, and leverage in creating social change.  Boomers may not have invented feminism but they sure as heck implemented it.  I predict massive improvements in health care, support services, building codes, and every other aspect of life.  Boomers have what community living has lacked for many years, cultural power.  All hail the revolution!
