Sooooooo cuuuuuute! This adorable little piglet is using a wheelchair made from K’Nex, a children’s construction set similar to Lego. Who knew a set of kid’s toys could be so support friendly? Although not perfect, it’s an ingenious approach to solving this pig’s mobility problem.  The chair was the brain child of veterinarian Dr. Len Lucero.  It’s a perfect example of how small solutions can have a huge impact on quality of life.

“Chris P. Bacon was born with malformed hind legs. Not able to use these legs, he has had to compensate by lifting his behind off of the ground and balancing on his forelimbs. At one pound, he accomplishes this with minimal effort. In the near future, this task will become more difficult as his body weight will increase and his center of balance will shift to the back part of his body.  For most animals, this would lead to their ultimate demise. For Chris P. Bacon, this is only the beginning of the rest of his life.” – Dr. Len Lucero

Change-friendly attitudes and solution-oriented people make superior quality supports.  I’m taking a moment to celebrate Dr. Lucero’s gift for it. Chris P. Bacon’s original home was overwhelmed by the idea of taking care of a pig with his needs.  Dr. Lucero has made him a home for life.

Chris P. Bacon has since graduated to a heavier, professional wheelchair since the original video that made him a YouTube sensation.  The new chair can be size adjusted and is heavier which allows him to get the traction he needs.

Inclusion System extends our profound respect and immeasurable gratitude to all the ancestors and keepers of the land on whose traditional territories our work takes place. We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional gathering place of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene people and the traditional homeland of the Métis people. This land is sacred, historical, and significant.

Every time we acknowledge this truth, we have an invitation and an opportunity to reflect on the wrongs of the past, what we do in the present, and what we can do to continually honour the people whose lands and water we benefit from today.

This statement only acts as a first step in honouring the land we reside on and its peoples, and must be paired with education, understanding and informed action.
