I Get By with A Little Help from My Friends
On the list of unfulfilled desires of people I know with disabilities, many of them talk about wanting more and better friendships. Having a disability can be isolating. It can be difficult to find people who relate to you.
The story of Dartanyon Crockett and Leroy Sutton struck a chord; they’ve got a friendship for the ages. Each leverage and challenge each other’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Not to mention they’re mighty handsome. These guys break down barriers together. They overcome obstacles and define a life that celebrates them. I admire that. Friends that are as powerful as this duo don’t happen every day.
For those of you who can’t watch the video, Dartanyon is blind and Leroy lost his legs in a train accident while still a little boy. They met through a mutual passion for wrestling. Together they support each other to be champion wrestlers and graduate from high school despite the challenges of their personal lives.
It’s important to have champions, to have people that help you through difficult patches and celebrate the joys of life. I’m lucky enough to have a bevy of beautiful indomitable ladies in my corner. We’re all stronger for the friendships we have. Dartanyon and Leroy have found a sympatico that is rare. I know I feel a bit stronger just looking at these guys take on the world, one wrestling ring at a time.
Sing it with me, I get by with a little help from my friends. Oooooh, I get by with a little help…from my friends!

Inclusion System extends our profound respect and immeasurable gratitude to all the ancestors and keepers of the land on whose traditional territories our work takes place. We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional gathering place of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene people and the traditional homeland of the Métis people. This land is sacred, historical, and significant.
Every time we acknowledge this truth, we have an invitation and an opportunity to reflect on the wrongs of the past, what we do in the present, and what we can do to continually honour the people whose lands and water we benefit from today.
This statement only acts as a first step in honouring the land we reside on and its peoples, and must be paired with education, understanding and informed action.
