A great way to generate feedback for your team members

Feedback from team members can be really helpful!
Feedback from team members can be really helpful!

You are a great manager. You know that meeting regularly one-on-one with each member of your team is important. Many managers tell me they struggle to come up with specific positive feedback for these meetings.

I have a sure fire way to get this feedback easily and efficiently.

Grab a co-worker who knows the person well and ask them two questions:

1)      Give me all the reasons you like working with ___?

2)      Please give me a specific example of something awesome ___ has done at work lately. Please be as specific as possible.

Usually meeting with one or two co-workers will generate a whole bunch of great positive feedback. The people you ask will also appreciate the opportunity to say nice things about their co-worker and you will grow closer with them too. I also find that listening to this feedback helps me come up with my own examples, reminding me what is unique and awesome about the person. These co-worker meetings can happen in five or ten minutes and require no preparation by anybody.

Sometimes you will get some negative feedback during this co-worker interview. I will deal with that in next week’s blog.

Overwhelmingly, the feedback will be positive and will give you great feedback for your one-on-one meeting.
