Our Statement in Support of Black Lives Matter

These past few weeks we have watched, horrified and outraged, at the events taking place in the U.S. and the awareness it has brought to racial injustice everywhere.

We are grateful for the tireless work of black communities around the world that have forced BLM from a moment into a global movement. We here at Inclusion System, stand in solidarity with the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement. While we have been trying to figure out how exactly we will educate and make systematic change in our company, we realised we do not have the luxury of waiting to declare our support. We feel it is far more important to speak out against injustice at this crucial time than to wait for our own comfort level to perfectly match the action that is required of us. We want to add one more voice to the chorus to ensure the message BLACK LIVES MATTER is never drowned out. We need to do our part to make certain no more black lives are stolen by a broken society.

We understand that “doing our part” requires much much more than putting out this statement. A statement is useless without action behind it. While we have always been a kind, inclusive and accepting organisation, we have looked inward and have seen that we can, and should, be doing a lot more to dismantle white supremacy. We are prepared and committed to taking concrete steps toward becoming a truly anti-racist company. We also hope that our action will inspire others within our industry to do the same.

We have lots of ideas, but want to take our time to have a well thought out and researched plan that considers all marginalized communities including Indigenous people and differently abled people before we put anything in place. Once we have done the important upfront work we will be public and transparent about the changes we make. (So watch this space!)

In the meantime we have donated to the following 2 organizations that are doing critical, urgent and essential work towards creating a more fair and just world to ALL those who live in it.

  1. Black Women in Motion
  2. Activist Medical Fund

We also recognize that a big part of the reason we have been able to build a successful business, is that we are a company owned by two cisgendered white men who have benefited from the privilege their race and sex brings them in this society. The owners of the company will also be making individual donations to the above stated organisations.

Inclusion System extends our profound respect and immeasurable gratitude to all the ancestors and keepers of the land on whose traditional territories our work takes place. We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional gathering place of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene people and the traditional homeland of the Métis people. This land is sacred, historical, and significant.

Every time we acknowledge this truth, we have an invitation and an opportunity to reflect on the wrongs of the past, what we do in the present, and what we can do to continually honour the people whose lands and water we benefit from today.

This statement only acts as a first step in honouring the land we reside on and its peoples, and must be paired with education, understanding and informed action.
